Monica Barbaro, 36, is an American actress best known for playing Natasha “Phoenix” Trace in Top Gun: Maverick and for her Oscar-nominated turn as Joan Baez in the 2024 Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2010 and has also appeared in Chicago P.D. and The Good Cop.
Barbaro earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for A Complete Unknown, a role that required her to learn guitar and sing in Baez’s keys. Her performance is widely considered the breakout moment of her career.

I think she is truly incredible. I could wax lyrical more, but I’ll leave it there.”
For Garfield, that’s practically a love letter. He has repeatedly stated he will never discuss his romantic life publicly. “I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever,” he told Esquire in 2024.
Barbaro has been similarly cautious, though she did tell InStyle that working with Garfield on their upcoming film Artificial pushed her to elevate her craft. “I just learned a lot from his approach to the material and to developing character, and I felt very fortunate to get to witness that in real time,” she said.
