What Happened to Charles Kelley? Lady A Singer Reveals Rare Blood Cancer Diagnosis at 45

Charles Kelley has spent his career singing about heartbreak and hope. On Tuesday, he shared the most personal update of his life: he has cancer.

The Lady A co-lead vocalist and founding member revealed he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, after a series of random rib fractures led his doctor to run blood tests. Kelley, 45, shared the news in an emotional Instagram video alongside his wife, Cassie, and said he remains hopeful and plans to keep working.

The Diagnosis: Rib Fractures Led to Blood Cancer Discovery

Kelley explained that he suffered “a couple of random rib fractures” that prompted his doctor to order several blood tests. One of the last tests revealed the blood cancer.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells found in the bone marrow, according to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. It causes bones to become weaker, which can lead to fractures like the ones Kelley experienced.

“I Feel Really Hopeful”: Kelley’s Optimistic Outlook

Despite the diagnosis, Kelley struck a determined and positive tone in his message to fans.

“I’m young, and I feel healthy, and the treatments, I will say, have just come so far even in the past five years, that life expectancy just far exceeds what it used to be,” he said. “I feel really hopeful, I really do.”

He noted that a friend was diagnosed with multiple myeloma about two months before him and that watching her journey “really helped me so much.”

A Sobriety Journey Parallel: “One Day at a Time”

Kelley, who has been open about his sobriety since entering treatment in 2022, compared his approach to the cancer diagnosis to his recovery journey.

“In the spirit of the same way we’ve shared my sobriety journey, just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing and it takes the power away from it a little bit,” he said. “We wanted to let y’all know what’s going on. We’re going to get through it. In sobriety, it’s all about one day at a time, and that we’re not in control, so that’s the way we’re looking at it.”

The Plan: Keep Working, Keep Performing

Kelley said the first six months of treatment won’t be “too super invasive” and that he intends to continue working with Lady A.

“We’ve got a new record coming out soon with Lady A, and we got Christmas shows, and this first six months of treatment, I believe, is not going to be too super invasive, that I can still work,” he said. “I think physically, I will feel like myself. I’ll have tough days, but I wanna keep working.”

He described performing with the band after learning the news as a reminder of where he belongs: “This is where I belong. I need to be happy and doing what I love to do, and spending and soaking up as much time with my family as I can as well.”

Lady A is set to launch its “This Winter’s Night Tour 2026” in December.

Bandmates and Fans Rally Around Kelley

Kelley’s Lady A bandmates Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood shared messages of support in the comments of his post.

“The strongest duo right here! Love y’all so much! You’ve got this!” Scott wrote.

“Covering you in prayer brother. Love y’all. We’re all here for you!” Haywood added.

Country artists including Martina McBride, Jake Owen, Shay Mooney, and Karen Fairchild also sent well wishes.

What’s Next

Kelley said he will keep fans updated on his health journey at appropriate times. His wife, Cassie, called it “just a season for us” and expressed gratitude for their care team in Nashville.

“It’s just another hurdle, and I feel confident that we’re going to get through it,” Kelley said.
