Mike Tomlin Wife: Who Is Kiya Winston?

Mike Tomlin Wife: Who Is Kiya Winston?

Mike Tomlin spent 19 seasons commanding the Pittsburgh Steelers sideline, but the most important partnership of his life began long before he ever coached a single NFL game. His wife, Kiya Winston, has been by his side since their college days, and as Tomlin transitions into a new chapter as an NBC analyst, her unwavering support remains the anchor of his personal life.

The couple has been married since 1996, making theirs one of the most enduring unions in professional sports. But Kiya Winston is far more than the wife of a legendary football coach. She is a fashion designer, an entrepreneur, and a mother of three who built her own successful brand while supporting her husband through nearly three decades of NFL life.

How Mike Tomlin and Kiya Winston Met

Mike Tomlin and Kiya Winston first crossed paths at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where both were student-athletes. Tomlin played wide receiver for the Tribe, while Winston was a gymnast.

Their meeting happened in an unexpected place: the athletic training room. Both were nursing injuries from their respective sports when they struck up a conversation. It was a humble beginning for a relationship that would span decades.

The couple dated through college and tied the knot in May 1996, shortly after Winston graduated. Tomlin had finished his playing career the year before, and the two began building a life together that would eventually take them across the country as Tomlin climbed the coaching ranks.

A Fashion Designer in Her Own Right

While Mike Tomlin became a household name on NFL sidelines, Kiya Winston carved out a successful career in fashion. Born on January 13, 1974, in Morristown, New Jersey, she developed a passion for design at a young age.

Kiya began sewing as a child, making pillows, blankets, and dresses from repurposed fabric. She started designing clothes because she struggled to find ready-made garments that fit her petite frame. By age 11, she was already using a sewing machine to create her own pieces.

She initially enrolled at William & Mary as a pre-med student, but her love for fashion ultimately won out. She transferred to the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Art, and Architectural Planning, where she earned a degree in fashion design. The decision proved prescient: combining a demanding medical career with the nomadic life of a football coach’s wife would have been nearly impossible.

Kiya founded the Kiya Tomlin clothing brand and launched Uptown Sweat, a collection of designer tracksuits, in 2014. Her designs are aimed at women over 30 and emphasize versatility, comfort, and sustainability. She opened the Kiya Tomlin Work/Shop in Etna, Pennsylvania, in 2018, a space where she designs, manufactures, and sells her clothing all under one roof.

Her brand has attracted a roster of high-profile clients, and her Instagram account, with more than 24,000 followers, regularly features models wearing her garments.

A Family Built in Pittsburgh

Mike and Kiya Tomlin have three children together: two sons and a daughter.

Their eldest son, Michael Dean “Dino” Tomlin Jr., was born on December 16, 2000. He followed in his father’s footsteps as a wide receiver, playing college football at Maryland before transferring to Boston College. Their second son, Mason, was born on January 15, 2002, and played defensive back at Columbia University.

Their daughter, Harlyn Quinn Tomlin, was born in 2006 and inherited her mother’s athletic gifts. She became a gymnast at Shadyside Academy and later competed for the Georgia Bulldogs gymnastics team.

The Tomlin family put down deep roots in Pittsburgh during Mike’s 19-year tenure with the Steelers, a stability that Kiya has spoken about with gratitude. In a 2026 acceptance speech for the Patricia R. Rooney Community Impact Award, she said: “It has truly been an honor to serve Pittsburgh for 19 years. Thank you”.

Standing Strong Through Transition

When Mike Tomlin stepped down as Steelers head coach in January 2026 after 19 seasons, Kiya was the first to speak publicly about his legacy. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she wrote: “I am incredibly proud of all he has accomplished, both on and off the field. Over the past few days, the messages and testimonies shared by current and former players—the men who knew him best—have been deeply moving. They’ve affirmed what I’ve always known to be true about his purpose and character”.

She emphasized that Tomlin’s true legacy wasn’t measured in wins and losses but in the lives he shaped. “From the very beginning, his purpose was clear: to help young men become great individuals. Coaching and fatherhood became the avenues through which he lived out that calling,” she wrote.

In March 2026, the couple received the Patricia R. Rooney Community Impact Award, recognizing their philanthropic contributions to Pittsburgh. Kiya delivered a passionate message about the city they called home for nearly two decades: “We never did it for the recognition, but I just want to thank you. More importantly, I want to thank all the many communities in Pittsburgh that really welcomed us with open arms”.
