Ken Urker, the on-and-off fiancé of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and father of her young daughter, was found dead at his Louisiana home on Thursday, his 34th birthday, in what Blanchard says she believes was an overdose.
The death marks a tragic turn in one of reality television’s most closely followed relationships, a decade-long on-and-off romance that began as a prison correspondence and produced a child before ending in separation earlier this year. Urker was 33 at the time of his death, with his birthday falling on the same day he was discovered.
Discovery and Cause of Death
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies responded to a residence in Raceland, Louisiana, at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, October 1. Urker was found dead upon arrival. The sheriff’s office said the death investigation remains ongoing.
Blanchard’s brother, Dylan, discovered Urker at the home. According to reports, Dylan and his wife had planned to take Urker out for dinner to celebrate his birthday and arrived at the residence to pick him up. Blanchard had sent Urker a text message wishing him a happy birthday earlier that day but received no response.
Blanchard told PEOPLE exclusively that she believes Urker overdosed, though she does not know what substance was involved or whether the overdose was intentional. “I don’t know if it was intentional or not,” she said. “He was not in a good state of mind lately.” She later told TMZ that an unidentified substance was found at the scene and that Urker did not have a history of drug problems.
Urker’s sister, Autumn, confirmed the death during a TikTok live session on Thursday evening. She said her brother’s last words to her were, “I love you.”
Blanchard’s Statement
In a statement following Urker’s death, Blanchard described him as “an amazing father and a man who was deeply loved.” She said he would “forever be my soulmate and my red string, a connection that time, distance, and even death can never erase.”
Blanchard claimed Urker had been “relentlessly cyberbullied” and subjected to an “unimaginable level of public scrutiny” during their relationship. She said the “cruelty directed toward him was something no human being should have to endure” and that the online harassment had a “profound impact” on him.
Regarding their daughter, Aurora, Blanchard vowed to “make sure she grows up knowing how deeply her father loved her” and “who he was beyond what strangers on the internet chose to say about him.”
A Decade-Long, On-and-Off Relationship
Urker and Blanchard first connected in 2017 after he watched the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest and sent her a letter of support while she was incarcerated at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. Blanchard was serving a 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder for her role in the 2015 killing of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.
The correspondence quickly turned romantic. Urker proposed during a prison visit in October 2018 with a silver band that Blanchard later said was confiscated by prison guards. The engagement ended the following year, and the couple separated.
During their time apart, Blanchard married Ryan Scott Anderson in a prison ceremony in July 2022. She was released from prison in December 2023 after serving seven years. By March 2024, she and Anderson had separated, and by April 2024, she and Urker had rekindled their relationship.
Blanchard announced her pregnancy with Urker’s child in July 2024. Their daughter, Aurora Raina Urker, was born on December 28, 2024, exactly one year after Blanchard’s release from prison.
The couple documented their relationship on Lifetime’s Gypsy Rose: Life After Lockup, but they had split again by late 2026. Reports indicated the separation stemmed from legal complications regarding paternity laws related to Blanchard’s divorce from Anderson, though a prenatal DNA test confirmed Urker as Aurora’s biological father.
The Shadow of Cyberbullying
Blanchard’s claim that Urker was a victim of relentless online harassment is not the first time the couple’s public profile has been linked to mental health struggles. Urker had previously been open about the challenges of living under intense media scrutiny, particularly after the release of The Act, the Hulu miniseries that dramatized Blanchard’s story. In her memoir, Blanchard wrote that Urker “couldn’t handle the sudden wave of attention” that followed the show’s premiere.
Following his death, Urker’s sister indicated that the family does not suspect foul play and clarified that his death was not attributed to natural causes. Claims about his mental health circulating on social media have not been verified by official sources.
What Comes Next
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office has not released a cause of death, and an official autopsy report has not been made public. Blanchard has asked for privacy for herself and her family as they process the loss.
For Aurora, who will turn two in December, the death leaves a complicated legacy: a father she will know only through memories and the public record of a relationship that played out largely in the spotlight. As Blanchard put it, she intends to make sure her daughter knows “how deeply her father loved her,” a promise that now carries the weight of a life cut short on the very day it was being celebrated.
