Ken Urker, the former fiancé of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and father of her daughter, was found dead at his Louisiana home on Thursday, his 34th birthday. He was 33.
The death closes the final chapter of a relationship that spanned nearly a decade and captured public attention long before the couple welcomed a child together. Their story began as a prison correspondence, survived multiple breakups, and ended with Urker’s passing just months after the couple’s most recent separation.
Who Was Ken Urker?
Ken Urker was a Louisiana resident best known for his relationship with Gypsy Rose Blanchard, the convicted murderer whose story became a cultural phenomenon through documentaries and television series. He first entered Blanchard’s life as a prison pen pal in 2017 and remained a recurring figure through her incarceration, release, marriage to another man, and subsequent return to Urker.
The couple’s daughter, Aurora Raina Urker, was born on December 28, 2024. The child’s name carried personal significance for the couple. Blanchard has said that during their early relationship in 2018, she and Urker wrote each other’s future child’s names on pieces of paper, and both chose “Aurora” without knowing the other had picked the same name.
Urker’s mother, Raina Williams, spoke publicly about the couple’s reconciliation in 2024. His sister, Autumn, confirmed his death on TikTok Live, stating that her brother’s last words to her were “I love you”.
How They Met
Urker first contacted Blanchard in 2017 after watching the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest. The documentary examined Blanchard’s relationship with her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, who was killed in 2015. Urker sent Blanchard a letter of support while she was incarcerated at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri, where she was serving a 10-year sentence for her role in her mother’s death.
The correspondence quickly evolved into regular phone calls. Blanchard later described the connection as immediate. “We became fast friends,” she said in a 2019 interview. “It was pretty soon after that that we started talking on the phone. We would spend hours on the phone. I talked to him like I had known him my whole life and vice versa”.
Their first in-person meeting came during a prison visit. Blanchard recalled that within the first 30 minutes, Urker leaned over and kissed her. “The kiss he gave me was quite passionate,” she said. “I looked at him and was like, ‘I didn’t even know you liked me like that,’ and he said ‘Yeah, I have for a while.’ And I’m like, ‘I have for a while too’”.
The Engagement and First Breakup
Urker proposed to Blanchard during a prison visit in October 2018. He presented her with a silver band, which Blanchard later said was confiscated by prison guards.
The engagement ended the following year, with the couple separating in 2019. The split was not permanent. They briefly reconciled in August 2019 before going their separate ways for several years.
During that long separation, Blanchard married Ryan Scott Anderson in a prison ceremony in July 2022. She was released from prison in December 2023 after serving seven years of her original 10-year sentence.
The Reconciliation
Blanchard separated from Anderson in March 2024, just three months after her release. By April 2024, she and Urker had rekindled their relationship. Urker recalled the moment: “The very first weekend of April [2024] is when I came to visit her for the first time after she had gotten out. We spent that weekend together and had an incredible time”.
Blanchard described the reconnection as a realization that their bond had endured. “Ken and I have kept a friendship this whole time,” she said. “It wasn’t until I filed for divorce that I kind of really realized that that spark, that connection [with Urker] is even better than I expected”.
The couple announced they were expecting a child in July 2024. Blanchard described the pregnancy as “not planned at all” but said they were “both very excited to take on this new journey of parenthood”.
A Daughter and a Final Separation
Aurora Raina Urker was born on December 28, 2024. Blanchard announced the birth on social media on January 1, 2025.
The couple documented their relationship on Lifetime’s Gypsy Rose: Life After Lockup, but they had separated again by late 2026. Reports indicated the split stemmed from legal complications regarding paternity laws related to Blanchard’s divorce from Anderson. A prenatal DNA test had confirmed Urker as Aurora’s biological father.
The Death
Urker was found dead at a residence in Raceland, Louisiana, on Thursday, October 1. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies responded to a call at approximately 6:15 p.m. and found Urker dead upon arrival. The death investigation remains ongoing.
Blanchard told PEOPLE that she believes Urker overdosed, though she does not know what substance was involved or whether the overdose was intentional. “I don’t know if it was intentional or not,” she said. “He was not in a good state of mind lately”.
Blanchard said Urker had been subjected to “relentless cyberbullying” and “an unimaginable level of public scrutiny” during their relationship. “The cruelty directed toward him was something no human being should have to endure,” she said.
She described him as “an amazing father and a man who was deeply loved” and said he would “forever be my soulmate and my red string, a connection that time, distance, and even death can never erase”.
Regarding their daughter, Blanchard vowed to “make sure she grows up knowing how deeply her father loved her and who he was beyond what strangers on the internet chose to say about him”.
