Ken Urker first wrote to Gypsy Rose Blanchard in 2017 as a stranger moved by her story. By the time he died on October 1, 2026, his 34th birthday, he had been her pen pal, her fiancé, her ex, her second chance, and the father of her only child.
Their relationship spanned nearly a decade and defied the conventional arc of romance. It began behind prison walls, survived a broken engagement and a years-long separation, and ended with a shared daughter and a sudden death in Louisiana. Here is the complete timeline of how Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ken Urker found each other, lost each other, and found each other again.
2017: A Letter That Started Everything
Urker first connected with Blanchard after watching the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest, which examined her relationship with her late mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard. He sent her a letter of support while she was incarcerated at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri, serving a 10-year sentence for her role in her mother’s 2015 murder.
Blanchard wrote back, and the correspondence quickly became a lifeline. “We became fast friends,” she recalled. “It was pretty soon after that that we started talking on the phone. We would spend hours on the phone. I talked to him like I had known him my whole life and vice versa”.
October 2018: The Prison Proposal
During a prison visit in October 2018, Urker proposed. He presented Blanchard with a silver band, which she later said was confiscated by prison guards. The engagement was kept private, shared only with their closest family members.
The couple planned to marry in January 2020.
Summer 2019: The Breakup
The engagement ended in the summer of 2019, months before their planned wedding. The split was difficult for Blanchard to understand at the time.
In her memoir, she wrote that she initially believed the breakup was caused by the attention surrounding The Act, the Hulu series that dramatized her story and turned her into a “pseudo-celebrity.” She wrote that the media “investigated everything about me, including Ken” and that “the invasion was really hard on him”.
But Blanchard later learned the real reason. Urker reached out to explain that people in his life had advised him to step aside. “‘If you love her, you’ll set her free,’ was the common piece of advice he’d hear again and again,” Blanchard wrote. “I see now, he believed he was acting in my best by sacrificing his own needs and wants”.
Urker later confirmed the breakup was influenced by outside voices, including a Dr. Phil podcast that discussed Blanchard and mentioned him by name. “I had a lot of people in my ear just telling me that the best thing I can do for her is to give her some time to build a self-identity,” he said.
2019-2023: Years Apart and a Prison Marriage
During their separation, Blanchard married Ryan Scott Anderson, a special education teacher from Louisiana, in a prison ceremony on July 21, 2022. Urker and Blanchard maintained occasional contact but were not together.
Blanchard was released from prison on December 28, 2023, after serving roughly eight years of her 10-year sentence. Anderson picked her up.
March-April 2024: The Reconciliation
Blanchard separated from Anderson in March 2024, just three months after her release. By April, she and Urker had reconnected. Urker later recalled the moment: “The very first weekend of April [2024] is when I came to visit her for the first time after she had gotten out. We spent that weekend together and had an incredible time”.
Blanchard described the reconnection as a natural progression. “Ken and I have kept a friendship this whole time,” she said. “It wasn’t until I filed for divorce that I kind of really realized that that spark, that connection [with Urker] is even better than I expected”.
The couple even got matching tattoos shortly after reconnecting.
July 2024: Pregnancy Announcement
In July 2024, Blanchard announced she was pregnant with Urker’s child. She described the pregnancy as “not planned at all” but said they were “both very excited to take on this new journey of parenthood”.
The announcement prompted speculation about paternity because Blanchard was still legally married to Anderson at the time of conception. In November 2024, Blanchard shared the results of a prenatal DNA test, confirming Urker as the father. “There’s been a lot of chatter around the paternity of our baby and while we’ve known for sure from the beginning, I feel that it’s finally time to put all these theories to rest. Here are the results showing Ken is the father,” she wrote.
December 28, 2024: Aurora Raina Urker Is Born
Blanchard gave birth to their daughter, Aurora Raina Urker, in Louisiana on December 28, 2024, exactly one year after her release from prison. Urker confirmed the birth.
The name Aurora held special significance. Blanchard revealed that years earlier, she and Urker had each independently written down “Aurora” as their future daughter’s name, not knowing the other had chosen the same one.
2025-2026: Parenthood and a Final Separation
The couple raised Aurora together, documenting their life on reality television and sharing glimpses of parenthood with the public. Urker embraced fatherhood with visible enthusiasm, describing the daily wonders of watching Aurora develop.
But the relationship did not last. By late 2026, Blanchard and Urker had separated again, reportedly over legal complications regarding paternity laws related to Blanchard’s divorce from Anderson. They never re-engaged.
October 1, 2026: Ken Urker Dies
Urker was found dead at his Louisiana home on October 1, 2026, his 34th birthday. Blanchard’s brother Dylan discovered him when he arrived to take Urker out for dinner. Blanchard had sent him a birthday message earlier that day but received no response.
Blanchard told PEOPLE she believes Urker overdosed, though she does not know what substance was involved or whether the overdose was intentional. “He was not in a good state of mind lately,” she said.
She described him as “an amazing father and a man who was deeply loved” and said he would “forever be my soulmate and my red string, a connection that time, distance, and even death can never erase.”
Aurora, now 21 months old, will grow up knowing her father through the memories Blanchard has vowed to preserve. “She will grow up knowing how deeply her father loved her,” Blanchard said.
