Cristina Ulbrich, the wife of Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, has passed away at 48 following a courageous battle with cancer, the team announced Thursday.Her death during the opening week of NFL training camp has sent shockwaves through the league, prompting an outpouring of support from teams, players, and coaches who knew the Ulbrich family.
For nearly three decades, Cristina was the steadfast anchor behind one of football’s most respected defensive minds.While Jeff Ulbrich built a career as a hard-nosed NFL linebacker and later as a coach, Cristina built something far more enduring: a family defined by love, resilience, and unwavering support.
A Love Story That Began in Hawaii
The Ulbrichs’ story began in 1997 at the University of Hawaii. Jeff, then a junior college linebacker on a recruiting visit, met Cristina and was immediately drawn to her.He transferred to Hawaii and starred for the Rainbow Warriors, racking up 169 tackles in 1999 before embarking on a 10-season NFL playing career with the San Francisco 49ers.
The couple married and built a life that would take them across the country—five moves after Jeff’s playing days ended in 2009, as he transitioned from the field to the sideline.Through every relocation, Cristina was the constant.
The Quiet Strength Behind the Coach
Those who knew Cristina describe a woman who understood the demands of football life but never let it overshadow what mattered most. Former 49ers teammate Takeo Spikes told The Athletic that Jeff’s devotion to his family was unmistakable.
“When he got around his family it was like nothing else mattered,” Spikes said. “He didn’t care what type of day he had at the office. It was like, ‘I just want to make sure I’m around for them’”.
That devotion went both ways. In 2010, as Jeff attempted to break into coaching, Cristina told the Morgan Hill Times that the family would put everything on hold until he found his footing.
“We’re not taking any vacations or going anywhere until he has something down,” she said. “We know Jeff’s coaching can take us anywhere, just like with playing. I’m on board and so are the kids”.
When Jeff battled concussions during his playing career, Cristina found peace in his transition to coaching. “It’s knowing we don’t have to worry about his health anymore,” she said.
A Proud Moment on the Jets Sideline
Perhaps the most public glimpse of Cristina’s pride came in October 2024, when Jeff served as the New York Jets’ interim head coach following Robert Saleh’s dismissal. A photo captured Cristina kissing her husband on the sideline before his first game in charge—a tender moment that resonated with fans who understood the journey behind it.
That image, now shared widely in the wake of her passing, serves as a reminder of the partnership that sustained Jeff through the highs and lows of an NFL life.
The Falcons Family Responds
Cristina’s death was announced Thursday night by the Falcons, who called her “a devoted wife, mother, and friend whose strength, grace, and resilience touched all who knew her”.Jeff was away from the team during the first three days of training camp, attending to his family.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank issued a heartfelt statement: “Cristina will always be an important part of our Falcons family. My heart is with Jeff, Samantha, Jax, Jace and the entire Ulbrich family during this unimaginable time. It was always evident how deeply Cristina loved her family and how fiercely she supported them”.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the loss Friday, calling it “heartbreaking.” “We, like any family, will support Jeff and the kids and will put our arms around him and the kids, literally and as an organization,” he said.
Players echoed that sentiment. Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell revealed that Ulbrich rarely brought up his wife’s illness last season—and when he did, it was with remarkable composure. Terrell noted that Cristina had told Jeff to stay strong for his players.
“His commitment is different,” Terrell said. “He was so strong dealing with it. He was doing that at a high level, laughing, doing what he’s doing, coaching”.
A Legacy of Family
Cristina leaves behind three children: daughter Samantha and sons Jax and Jace.In every statement released Thursday, the children were named alongside Jeff—a testament to the family unit Cristina devoted her life to building.
“The greatest legacy Cristina leaves behind is the family she loved so completely,” Blank said, “and her strength and spirit will continue to shine through them”.
The New York Jets, where Jeff coached for four seasons, also released a statement: “Cristina will be remembered for her warmth, strength and unwavering devotion to her family. We extend our deepest condolences and love to Jeff, their children and all who knew and loved her”.
As the Falcons continue training camp without their defensive coordinator, the organization has made one thing clear: Jeff Ulbrich and his children will not grieve alone. The football community, from Atlanta to New York to San Francisco, has wrapped its arms around them.
