The first rule was eyes down. I had to keep my eyes down and not look at an officer or another girl. We were told to march six feet apart, and every morning we had exercises.

Hay Girls Institution was established in 1961 as a maximum security annex for girls committed to Parramatta who were considered to need additional discipline and training.
