Who Is Louise Millington-Cotes? The Woman at the Center of the Sir Ranulph Fiennes Care Controversy

Who Is Louise Millington-Cotes? The Woman at the Center of the Sir Ranulph Fiennes Care Controversy

Louise Millington-Cotes spent nearly two decades as one of Britain’s most private public figures—the wife of the man the Guinness Book of Records once called the world’s greatest living explorer. Today, she is the subject of a nationwide outcry, accused of unlawfully isolating her ailing husband and keeping his whereabouts hidden from friends and family.

The story has gripped the UK: Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the legendary 82-year-old adventurer who has Parkinson’s disease, has not been seen in public since October 2024. A care watchdog later concluded he was “unlawfully deprived of his liberty” while living in a Welsh care home under a false name. The woman authorities say orchestrated that arrangement? His wife, Louise Millington-Cotes.

A Life Before the Headlines

Louise Millington-Cotes, 59, was born roughly 23 years after her famous husband. Before marrying Sir Ranulph in 2005, she worked as a horse trainer from Cheshire. Their relationship began after the death of Sir Ranulph’s first wife, Virginia “Ginny” Fiennes, who died of cancer in 2004. The couple married just a year later, and in 2006, Louise gave birth to their daughter, Elizabeth—Sir Ranulph’s only child.

For years, Louise maintained a low profile. That changed dramatically in September 2026, when a series of explosive investigations revealed the extent of the secrecy surrounding Sir Ranulph’s care.

The Care Home Controversy

According to care home owners and legal documents, Louise Millington-Cotes holds lasting power of attorney over Sir Ranulph’s health, welfare, property, and financial affairs. She was granted this authority in 2024, around the time Sir Ranulph made his final public appearance via a pre-recorded video at a Royal Geographical Society gala.

What followed, investigators allege, was a campaign of extreme isolation. At a care home in rural Wales, Sir Ranulph was registered under a false name. He was allegedly confined to his room, forbidden from socializing with other residents, and required to wear a disguise—hat, sunglasses, and gloves—whenever he left the premises for walks, reportedly to prevent anyone from recognizing his frostbite-damaged hands.

The care home owner said Louise claimed her husband was “an ex-SAS man whose life might be in danger from extremists” and that staff at a previous facility had tried to kill him. Visitors at an earlier London care home were allegedly required to sign non-disclosure agreements before seeing him.

Perhaps most troubling to regulators: the Care Inspectorate of Wales concluded in January 2026 that Sir Ranulph was being “deprived of his liberty unlawfully” because Louise had failed to secure a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) order—a legal requirement for restricting someone’s freedom in a care setting. Despite repeated warnings from care home staff, no such order was ever obtained. In March 2026, Louise abruptly removed Sir Ranulph from the Welsh facility. His current whereabouts remain unknown to everyone except Louise and their daughter.

The Family Revolt

The revelations have sparked a bitter family feud. Louise’s own son—Sir Ranulph’s stepson, Alexander Millington-Cotes—has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £55,000 for legal fees to strip his mother of power of attorney. Alexander, 31, is reportedly estranged from Louise. He said his “personal ambition would be to just see that power taken away from my mother” and transferred to someone who would respect Sir Ranulph’s wishes.

“Ran has spent his entire life pushing boundaries for others and representing the best of human endurance,” Alexander wrote on the fundraising page. “Now, he needs us to fight for him.”

Other family members have joined the chorus. Arabella McIntyre-Brown, sister of Sir Ranulph’s late first wife, said: “We—Ran’s family and close friends—have been very concerned for his safety and mental wellbeing [and the fact he has] been isolated for so long.” Celebrity friends including Bear Grylls and Ben Fogle have also called for urgent investigations.

What Louise Has Said

Louise Millington-Cotes has not spoken publicly about the allegations. Multiple news organizations have reported being unable to reach her for comment.

However, the care home owner’s account offers some insight into her stated motivations. According to the owner, Louise believed she was protecting her husband—from trauma, from unwanted attention, and from potential harm. She allegedly told staff that reminding Sir Ranulph of his past adventures in Antarctica or Everest would “cause him trauma and upset him.” She also preferred him to eat mainly salads and soups and restricted his reading materials to books she pre-approved.

The Legal and Ethical Questions Ahead

Louise Millington-Cotes is not a household name by choice. She became one by consequence—of decisions made in secret, of legal boundaries allegedly crossed, and of a family fractured by suspicion.

The central question now is whether her power of attorney will survive. Michael Kobold, a friend and collaborator of Sir Ranulph for nearly 30 years, is driving a campaign to bring the case before the Court of Protection, the body with authority to revoke a lasting power of attorney. The Office of the Public Guardian, which oversees such cases, has been accused by the family of ignoring repeated requests to investigate.

For now, Sir Ranulph Fiennes remains hidden—a man who spent his life charting the most remote corners of the planet, now unreachable to those who know him best. The woman who once stood beside him on that journey now stands accused of building the walls that keep him from the world.

There is a maybe in all this.. he is not going to be enjoying his deterioration with Parkinson’s ..maybe the couple decided it was best to keep him out of the public eye.and he agreed to it all ..or maybe he’s not able to make decisions in which case the present wife has had an attack of hubris and has overestimated her importance in the whole scale of things .Hes a man with an immense international
reputation and what happens to him is in the public domain whether she likes it or not . It takes two to tango of course so it may all have been his choice and she is only doing what he asked…except that Parkinsons means that you lose cognitive powers sooner or later hence POA…let the truth emerge…if you live a public life and spend public funds for your adventures there is a payback ..it’s a miracle they kept it under wraps for so long …
