Dante Moore’s rise to college football stardom didn’t happen in a vacuum. Behind the highlight reels and NIL deals is a family story shaped by sacrifice, resilience, and a genuine love that runs deeper than any game. From a single father who worked multiple jobs to a mother who battled cancer while her son navigated the pressures of big-time football, the Moore family has been the quiet force powering Oregon’s quarterback.

Who Are Dante Moore’s Parents?

Dante Moore is the son of Otha Moore and Jera Jane Bohlen-Moore. His parents split when he was young, and the family’s story is one of two households connected by love and a shared commitment to their children’s futures.

Otha, a Detroit native, raised Dante and his two older siblings primarily as a single father. Jera, who is from Ohio, remained in her home state while Dante moved to Detroit with his father. The children saw their mother during summer vacations and holidays, and she would make the five-hour drive to Detroit for games and activities whenever she could.

Otha Moore: The Father Who Worked Tirelessly

Otha Moore’s story is one of relentless hard work. He worked as an engineer at a Ford plant, but that was far from his only job. To support his family, Otha also ran a landscaping business, bartended at Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers games, and coached youth sports teams—all while making sure he never missed one of Dante’s games.

Dante grew up helping his father with the landscaping work, an experience that shaped his perspective on effort and sacrifice. His personal motto, “Hard work is undefeated,” comes directly from watching his father grind day after day.

“He’s the youngest of three. He credits his older brother and sister for helping raise him,” CBS Sports’ Jenny Dell said about Dante’s upbringing. “He says his mentality comes from his dad, a single dad, and that’s what sets him apart.”

Otha’s influence has been a recurring theme throughout Dante’s career. When Dante got emotional after Oregon’s win over Boise State in 2026, he explained that hearing his father’s voice in a motivational video hit him deeply. “With that voice coming from my dad, you know, I got emotional. I cried,” Dante said. “It just shows how my family is, that whatever you do in life, you’ve got to have some joy and a smile, good and bad.”

Jera Bohlen-Moore: A Mother and a Fighter

Jera Bohlen-Moore isn’t just Dante’s mother—she’s also an athlete and a survivor. In high school, she was a standout basketball player for Logan High School’s Lady Chiefs in Ohio. By 2022, decades after graduating in 1997, she still ranked as the fourth-leading scorer in the team’s history and held the second-highest per-game scoring average.

Her athletic background gave her a foundation for the battle she would face years later. In 2023, during Dante’s freshman spring at UCLA, Jera was diagnosed with breast cancer. Dante remembers the moment vividly. “My mom, she usually texts with her voice. So when I was reading the message, it was a long paragraph, and then she sent another message, and she was like, ‘I have cancer,’” he recalled. “And it said cancer, like she spelled it wrong, and I was just praying like she didn’t mean what she meant to say. She corrected the spelling and said she has cancer.”

He dropped his phone and cried. “You don’t want to lose your mother, you don’t want to lose anyone in your family. Being her youngest child, I’m a mama’s boy. I love her to death,” he said.

Watching his mother endure chemotherapy while trying to focus on school and football took a heavy toll. Dante later revealed that he struggled with depression during that period, writing in a letter to Oregon Governor Tina Kotek that “the pressure and expectations that come with playing quarterback at a high level felt overwhelming at 18.”

Jera was declared cancer-free in the summer of 2024, and Dante has continued to advocate for cancer awareness and mental health resources ever since.

Dante Moore’s Siblings

Dante is the youngest of three children. He has an older brother, Otha Moore Jr. , and an older sister, Adar Moore. Adar graduated from Delaware State and frequently serves as a motherly presence in Dante’s life. Dante credits both of his older siblings for helping raise him.

Some sources also mention that Dante has three brothers and one sister, which may include half-siblings or extended family members. The family clearly means everything to him—when he committed to Oregon and later returned after his UCLA stint, those decisions were made with family input and consideration.

A Family Divided by Football Rivalries

Like many families with roots in the Midwest, the Moores have a friendly football rivalry. Otha is a diehard University of Michigan fan, while Jera comes from Ohio and a family of Buckeyes. That Michigan-Ohio State divide adds a layer of fun to family gatherings, though Dante’s path has taken him far from both schools to the Pacific Northwest.

What the Moore Family Means to Dante’s Story

The Moore family’s influence shows up in everything Dante does. His work ethic comes from Otha’s example. His resilience comes from watching Jera fight cancer. His humility and joy on the field come from understanding that football is a game meant to be played with a smile, even when life gets heavy.

Dante once described himself simply as “a young kid from Detroit” who plays with a smile on his face. That kid had a father who mowed lawns and bartended to give him a chance, and a mother who fought through chemotherapy to see him thrive. The family behind the quarterback is the story behind the success—and it’s one worth telling.
