Minecraft New Dimension: The Sift Arrives in 2027 After 14-Year Wait

Minecraft is getting its first new dimension in over 14 years, and it’s called The Sift. Mojang announced the dimension during Minecraft Live September 2026, confirming it will join the Overworld, the Nether, and the End as the game’s official fourth dimension.

The announcement ends one of the longest content droughts in gaming history. The End was added in October 2011, meaning players have been exploring the same three dimensions for nearly 15 years. The Sift changes that.

What Is The Sift?

The Sift is described by Mojang as “beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls.” A brief in-development look during the broadcast showed a dimension with pinkish blocks and blue-green vegetation, a visual palette unlike anything in the existing game.

Two biomes have been confirmed so far. The Meadow features lush, colorful grass with new flora and fauna. The Carapace is more desert-themed, with massive bone structures reminiscent of fossils found in the Nether’s Soul Sand Valley.

A new mob called the Blub has also been revealed, a light blue, rabbit-like creature that may serve as the dimension’s mascot, similar to how the Ghast represents the Nether or the Enderman represents the End.

How to Access The Sift

Mojang is keeping details about how players will access The Sift in vanilla Minecraft under wraps. However, one report suggests entry will likely be through portals found in Ancient Cities. That would connect the dimension thematically to the sculk and soul-based mechanics already present in the game.

Players won’t have to wait until 2027 to see it, though. The Sift makes its playable debut in Minecraft Dungeons II, launching September 29, 2026.

The Dungeons II Version

In Dungeons II, The Sift is accessed through rifts that appear throughout the interconnected world. The dimension has been overrun by Illagers who are harvesting its souls, and it features red and orange stone, green vegetation, sculk, and a hazardous liquid called Ichor.

Bosses in the Dungeons II version include the Monarchs, the Sculk Monstrosity, and the Harmonizer. Mojang has not confirmed how many of these enemies will cross over into the vanilla Minecraft release.

Why This Matters

The Sift represents a philosophical shift for Minecraft. Lead designer Jens Bergensten noted that The End was developed during a “hackathon-esque” era where features were conceived and shipped within a week. The Sift, by contrast, is the product of long-term planning and deliberate design.

“We felt that the most important thing was that it felt complementary to the existing dimensions,” Bergensten said. “When you go there, it will feel different, it will look different.”

The dimension also opens the door for more radical content updates. If The Sift succeeds, Mojang may feel emboldened to add further dimensions rather than confining new content to the existing three.

Also Announced: Ice Caves

The Sift wasn’t the only reveal at Minecraft Live. Mojang also confirmed Ice Caves are coming to the main game, a rare underground biome featuring glowing ice crystals that serve as natural light sources.

These caves will be inhabited by Frozen Zombies, a new variant that throws snowballs and can freeze players on repeated hits. Players may be able to create these zombies by luring normal undead into powder snow.

The Bottom Line

The Sift is the biggest structural addition to Minecraft in over a decade. It’s coming to Java and Bedrock in 2027, but players can get their first taste when Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29, 2026.

For a game that has thrived on incremental updates for 15 years, a new dimension is a statement. Minecraft isn’t just expanding. It’s evolving.
