Joseph Fiennes Parents: Meet Mark Fiennes and Jennifer Lash, the Artists Behind the Fiennes Dynasty

Joseph Fiennes didn’t become an actor by accident. He was raised by two artists who filled their nomadic home with paint, prose, and a relentless belief that creative expression was as essential as breathing.

His father was a celebrated photographer. His mother was a novelist and painter who faced cancer with the same fierce curiosity she brought to everything else. Together, Mark Fiennes and Jennifer Lash raised seven children, including two of Britain’s most famous actors, while moving through fifteen different homes across England and Ireland.

Here’s the story of the two people who made the Fiennes family what it is.

Jennifer Lash: The Novelist Who Taught Her Children Fearlessness

Jennifer Anne Mary Alleyne Lash, known to everyone as Jini, was born on February 27, 1938, in Chichester, Sussex. She was an English novelist and painter whose creative energy seemed to have no limits.

She published her first novel, The Burial, at just nineteen years old, earning immediate critical acclaim. Four more novels followed, each grappling with dark forces of violence and love through a distinctly Irish lens.

But her greatest work may have been the family she built. She married Mark Fiennes in 1962, and together they raised seven children: actors Ralph and Joseph, filmmakers Martha and Sophie, composer Magnus, conservationist Jacob, and a foster son, Michael Emery, an archaeologist.

Jini’s approach to parenting was to encourage whatever each child wanted to do. “Her mantra was whatever you wanted to do, whether you wanted to be a dustman or a zookeeper, that was absolutely brilliant,” Magnus recalled.

In the late 1980s, Jini was diagnosed with breast cancer. She responded by putting on her Nikes, grabbing a rucksack, and walking a pilgrimage alone from France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The journey became her book On Pilgrimage, which began with one of the bravest lines Joseph has ever read: “Poor cancer.”

She died on December 28, 1993, at just 55 years old, surrounded by her family.

Mark Fiennes: The Photographer Who Captured the World

Mark Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes was born on November 11, 1933. He began his working life as a tenant farmer before turning to photography full-time in the 1970s.

He built an international reputation specializing in art, architecture, landscapes, and gardens. He was a regular contributor to Country Life between 1983 and 1985, and his work illustrated numerous books.

A retrospective of his work at the Menier Gallery in London in 2003 drew praise for his “moments of reportage that reflect his eye, his humour and his political sensibility.”

Mark was also a cousin of the famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

He died suddenly on December 30, 2004, at his home in Clare, Suffolk, at the age of 70. His actor sons Ralph and Joseph broke off filming commitments to return home. The family gathered at the house he shared with his second wife, Caroline, whom he married in 1996.

A Nomadic Childhood That Built Artists

The Fiennes children didn’t grow up in one place. Mark and Jini renovated fifteen consecutive homes across Suffolk, Ireland, Wiltshire, and London, creating a childhood that was unconventional, creative, and sometimes chaotic.

That nomadic existence gave the children a confidence that led to remarkable success, particularly in drama and music. It also gave them a deep appreciation for culture, for storytelling, and for the idea that art wasn’t a career choice. It was a way of life.

The Bottom Line

Joseph Fiennes’ parents were Mark Fiennes, a distinguished photographer, and Jennifer Lash, a novelist and painter of unusual insight. They married in 1962, raised seven children, and instilled in each of them the belief that creativity was worth pursuing.

Jini died of cancer in 1993, before she could see the full extent of her children’s success. Mark died in 2004, after a career that took him around the world. Together, they built a family that has produced some of Britain’s most respected actors, filmmakers, and musicians.

Joseph Fiennes’ talent didn’t come from nowhere. It came from a mother who wrote novels while raising seven children, and a father who captured the world through a lens. And it came from a home where art was never optional.
