The Lady A star, who revealed Tuesday he’s battling multiple myeloma, was born to Dr. John W. Kelley and Gayle Kelley. His father was a respected cardiologist, and his mother was the quiet force behind a family of three boys who all found their way into music. Dr. John W. Kelley: The Cardiologist Who Saved Lives
Charles Kelley’s father, Dr. John W. Kelley, was a cardiologist in Augusta, Georgia. His impact on the community was so profound that an endowment at Piedmont Augusta was named in his honor.
Charles has spoken about his father with deep admiration. “My father, he’s always been a big hero for me and my brothers,” he said. “It’s funny when I come back to this town I have so many people come up to me and say like ‘your dad,’ he was a cardiologist, ‘helped save my grandfather’s life.’ I just think that you know he’s always been a hero for me.”
The Kelley brothers’ connection to Augusta isn’t just sentimental. In 2022, Charles, Josh, and John hosted the first annual “Sticks and Strings” concert to benefit three local charities, including the John W. Kelley Endowment at Piedmont Augusta.
Gayle Kelley: The Mother Behind the Music
Gayle Kelley raised three sons who all became musicians. Charles was the youngest of the three, born September 11, 1981.
It was his mother who helped foster the creative environment that allowed her boys to pursue music. Charles began his musical career at age 11, and his parents encouraged him and his brothers from an early age.
Three Brothers, One Band, and a Lifetime of Music
The Kelley household was a musical one. Charles, along with his older brothers Josh and John, formed a band called Inside Blue as teenagers. They even released a five-song CD that caught the attention of a major label.
Josh Kelley went on to become a successful pop-rock artist with two Top 40 hits. He’s also married to actress Katherine Heigl, making Charles her brother-in-law. John Kelley went into the construction business, and Charles worked for him as an accountant before moving to Nashville to pursue music full-time.

The values Dr. John and Gayle Kelley instilled in their sons are still visible today. When Charles and his brothers returned to Augusta for their charity concert in 2022, they made sure to honor their parents’ impact on the community.
“My father, he’s always been a big hero for me,” Charles said. “He’s got a really amazing legacy.”
