Tom Holland is finally stepping into Fred Astaire’s dancing shoes, and he won’t be doing it alone. After nearly five years of waiting, the untitled Fred Astaire biopic has assembled a cast that feels almost too perfect: Sabrina Carpenter as Ginger Rogers, Margaret Qualley as Adele Astaire, and Holland himself as the legendary hoofer. With Paddington and Wonka director Paul King at the helm, this is shaping up to be one of the most exciting musical biopics in years. Here’s everything we know about the cast and what to expect.
Who Is Playing Fred Astaire?
Tom Holland has been attached to play Fred Astaire since 2021, and he’s taking the role seriously. The Spider-Man star has already begun dance rehearsals, describing the experience as “exciting and absolutely terrifying” because of the amount of work required to honor Astaire’s legacy.
Holland isn’t planning to fake it. He’s said he wants to perform all the dance sequences himself, without doubles, and shoot them in long takes just as Astaire did. That’s a bold commitment, but Holland has the background for it. His career began on London’s West End, where he played the title role in Billy Elliot: The Musical from 2008 to 2010, a role that demanded serious dancing and physical acting.
He’s also hinted that the film will showcase more than just his footwork. “There’s some singing, there’s a bunch of singing. I got to play the piano a whole bunch,” he revealed.

Sabrina Carpenter is set to play Ginger Rogers, Astaire’s most famous screen partner and the other half of one of Hollywood’s most beloved dance duos.
Carpenter’s casting is a fascinating full-circle moment. She’s primarily known as a pop superstar, but she has genuine dance training and starred in the Netflix dance film Work It. Margaret Qualley will play Adele Astaire, Fred’s older sister and his original dance partner. This is the emotional heart of the film, according to director Paul King, who said the story is fundamentally about Fred and Adele’s partnership.
Fred and Adele performed together on Broadway and in London’s West End for nearly three decades before Adele retired in 1932 to marry Lord Charles Cavendish. Her decision to leave the act was a major emotional blow to Fred, but it also pushed him toward Hollywood and the career that made him a legend.
Adele’s story has been largely lost to history. As King noted, no footage of her dancing survives. Qualley, a classically trained ballet dancer, brings both the technical skill and the dramatic depth to bring Adele back to life.
Who Is Directing?
Paul King, best known for directing Paddington and Wonka, is helming the project. King also co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen, tick, tick… BOOM!).
King spoke about the challenge of telling Adele’s story. “Fred left a timeless legacy of dance on film, most famously in his collaborations with Ginger Rogers, while Adele’s work has been lost to history,” he said. “The cinematic challenge of bringing to life these icons of the 20th century is one that I could not imagine without Tom Holland, Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter by my side.”
What Is the Fred Astaire Biopic About?
The film is based on Kathleen Riley’s book The Astaires: Fred & Adele. It will focus on Fred and Adele’s years performing together on Broadway and the West End, before Fred’s Hollywood career took off.
Holland has said the sibling relationship is what drew him to the script. “I think the thing I love the most about the script at the minute is it’s the story of two siblings, and being a sibling and a brother is like a huge part of my life,” he explained.
The film will also cover Fred’s legendary partnership with Ginger Rogers, but the emotional core is the brother-sister bond that started it all.
When Will Filming Begin?
Holland confirmed that filming is expected to begin in January 2027. He’ll dive back into the dance studio as soon as he finishes press tours for The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The film does not yet have an official title or release date.
Why This Cast Works
What makes this ensemble so promising is that each actor brings something essential to their role. Holland has the dance background and the physical commitment. Qualley has ballet training and dramatic range. Carpenter has musicality, charisma, and proven screen presence.
