Bruce Campbell has spent decades battling monsters on screen, but his real-life anchor has been the same for over 30 years: his wife, costume designer Ida Gearon. As the horror icon navigates a cancer diagnosis and a five-year prognosis, his family has become the center of his world more than ever.
Campbell, 68, has been married to Gearon since 1991. Together they’ve built a life in southern Oregon, far from the Hollywood machine, and recently collaborated on his deeply personal new film Ernie & Emma. Here’s everything we know about the people who matter most to him.
Wife Ida Gearon: A 35-Year Partnership
Bruce Campbell met Ida Gearon in 1990 on the set of the sci-fi horror film Mindwarp. She was working as a costume designer, and within a year, they were married. The couple tied the knot on Valentine’s Day 1991.
Their partnership has been both personal and professional. Gearon has worked as a costume and wardrobe designer on several of Campbell’s projects, including Army of Darkness and Running Time. More recently, she served as a producer on Ernie & Emma, the independent film Campbell wrote, directed, and starred in.
Campbell has spoken openly about how much he values working with his wife. “I love working with people that I know, plain and simple,” he said. “This familiarity allows for a shorthand in communication and makes a challenging process way more enjoyable.” Gearon echoed the sentiment, describing their dynamic as one built on mutual respect and a shared passion for storytelling.
The couple resides in Jacksonville, Oregon, where they’ve lived for decades after Campbell deliberately stepped away from Los Angeles in the late 1990s.
His First Marriage and Two Children
Before Gearon, Campbell was married to Christine Deveau. They wed in 1983 and had two children together before divorcing in 1989.
His daughter, Rebecca, was born around 1984, and his son, Andy, was born around 1987. Campbell has largely kept his children out of the spotlight, and little is publicly known about their adult lives. Both were born during his first marriage and would now be in their late 30s and early 40s.
His Parents and Siblings
Bruce Lorne Campbell was born on June 22, 1958, in Royal Oak, Michigan. His father, Charles Newton Campbell, worked as a billboard inspector for Chevrolet and was also an amateur actor. His mother, Joanne Louise Campbell, raised the family.
Campbell is the younger of two siblings. He has an older brother named Don and an older half-brother named Michael Rendine. He is of Scottish and Irish descent.
Family at the Center of His Final Act
As Campbell faces his cancer diagnosis, his family has become his priority. He’s been candid about leaning on Gearon and his loved ones through treatment, and he’s channeled much of his energy into Ernie & Emma, a film about grief, loss, and moving forward.
The subject matter hits close to home. “It’s a very fascinating time of having a movie about a guy who’s spreading his wife’s ashes, who died, made by a guy who’s dying,” Campbell admitted.
For a man who has spent his career fighting fictional horrors, the real battle has brought his family into sharper focus than ever. As Campbell put it, his decision to live with cancer rather than die from it is rooted in the people and the life he’s built far from Hollywood’s glare.
