Nicki Minaj cannot vote. Not in the 2026 midterms, not in any U.S. federal election, and not even for the man she calls her “wonderful, gracious, charming President.”
The Trinidad-born rapper has spent the past week urging young Americans to “vote red” on Fox News, appearing alongside Lara Trump and telling viewers that voting is the only way to have a say in what happens. There’s just one problem: she isn’t a U.S. citizen, and only citizens can legally cast a ballot in federal elections.
The Citizenship Question
Minaj was born in Trinidad and Tobago and moved to the United States at age five. In a 2018 Facebook post, she described herself as having come to the country “as an illegal immigrant @ 5 years old.” She has held a green card, granting her lawful permanent residency, for roughly two decades.
In September 2024, she confirmed her status directly during a TikTok livestream: “I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?”
In January 2026, after appearing at a White House event with President Trump, Minaj posted on X that she was “finalizing that citizenship paperwork” and claimed she had received a “Gold Trump card free of charge.” But a White House official later clarified that the card was merely a “memento,” not an actual immigration document, and that Minaj had already been a legal permanent resident, meaning she didn’t need it.
As of late September 2026, Minaj has not publicly confirmed that her citizenship process has been completed.
The Irony Everyone Noticed
The reaction to Minaj’s Fox News appearance was swift and brutal. Critics pointed out the obvious contradiction: a non-citizen telling citizens how to vote.
“You know how much you want a say in what happens, and realize that the only way to have that is by voting,” Minaj said during the interview. “Not just voting for the president, but just voting in, you know, all the local elections.”
Then she added: “Please, and vote red now.”
The Daily Beast’s headline captured the absurdity: “Trump Gets Celeb Who Can’t Vote to Tell Kids to Vote for Him.”
What This Means
Nicki Minaj has every right to express political opinions. She pays taxes, she lives in the country, and she has been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump and the Republican Party. What she cannot do is vote.
Her situation highlights a strange irony in modern political celebrity culture: someone with no legal standing to participate in the democratic process is being deployed by a major party to encourage others to do so.
For Minaj, the path to citizenship appears to be in motion, but until it’s complete, her voice on election day will be heard in interviews and on social media, not at the ballot box.
