Christa Pike Family: The Tragic Childhood and Absent Relatives Behind Tennessee’s Most Notorious Death Row Inmate

Christa Pike’s family is not in the headlines. They are not planning to hold her hand during her final hours. They are not fighting for her life. In fact, the family that shaped her, and failed her, has been largely invisible throughout the 31 years she has spent on death row.

As Pike, 50, awaits execution on September 30, 2026, for the 1995 torture-murder of Colleen Slemmer, the story of her own family reads like a case study in neglect, abuse, and systemic failure. Her attorneys have argued that the jury that sentenced her never heard the full extent of what happened to her at home. That family, they say, broke her long before she broke the law.

Here’s what we know about Christa Pike’s family.

Her Parents: Glenn Pike and Carissa Hansen

Christa Gail Pike was born on March 10, 1976, in Beckley, West Virginia, to Emil Glenn Pike and Carissa Hansen. She was premature, and her parents’ relationship was volatile from the start. They married, divorced, remarried, and divorced again, with infidelity and a suicide attempt by her father marking the chaos.

Neither parent provided a stable home. Court records and psychological evaluations describe a childhood marked by severe neglect. As an infant, Pike was reportedly seen crawling around a house filled with dog feces. She was undernourished and starved of affection.

Her father, Glenn, was physically abusive. He beat her with a belt. Her mother, Carissa, was absent in a different way. According to a forensic psychologist hired by Pike’s defense team, Carissa did not believe her daughter when she reported being raped.

The Abuse That Defined Her Childhood

The details of Pike’s childhood emerged years after her trial, during post-conviction hearings. A three-volume psychological history was prepared by forensic psychologist Dr. Diana McCoy, but Pike’s trial lawyers never put McCoy on the stand.

What McCoy found was horrifying.

Pike was sexually abused starting at age two or three by her grandmother’s boyfriend. She was raped at 11 by a 37-year-old neighbor who received a suspended sentence. She was raped again at 17 by a stranger. The abuse involved multiple men: her mother’s husbands, her mother’s boyfriends, and a neighbor.

Her older half-sister also abused her, burning her and once slamming her finger in a door deliberately. An aunt subjected her to what was described as “sadistic cruelty and humiliation.”

“The abuse and neglect endured by Christa Pike as a child was truly extreme and its severity was almost impossible to grasp,” a psychologist who assessed Pike in 2023 wrote.

The One Person Who Loved Her

In interviews, Pike has said the only person who ever showed her warmth was her paternal grandmother. That grandmother died in 1988, when Pike was 12 years old. Pike has described that loss as the moment her world fell apart.

After her grandmother’s death, Pike had no one. She was left with parents who neglected her, a mother who didn’t believe her, and a system that, despite knowing about the abuse, never intervened meaningfully.

The Family at Trial

When Pike went to trial in 1996, her defense lawyers made a catastrophic decision. The night before the sentencing phase, they abandoned their plan to present Dr. McCoy as their sole mitigation witness. They did not call any of the witnesses McCoy had recommended. Instead, they put Pike’s parents and an aunt on the stand.

Those three people did not speak about the years of rape, violence, and neglect. The jury never heard the full story.

A federal appeals court later ruled that the jury had heard enough about her difficult childhood from her mother, father, and aunt’s testimony, and that new evidence of bipolar disorder and PTSD “mostly repeated” what the jury already knew. The court denied relief.

Where Is Her Family Now?

Pike’s parents, Glenn Pike and Carissa Hansen, have not been part of her public life in decades. They are not listed among the supporters advocating for her clemency. They have not issued public statements as her execution approaches.

Pike has an unnamed half-sister from her mother’s previous relationship. There is no public record of any sibling advocating for her or speaking about their shared childhood.

Pike’s lawyers and supporters have framed her story as one of a child failed by everyone: her parents, the state, the juvenile system, and her own trial attorneys. That failure is now the central argument in her clemency petition. But the family at the center of that failure has remained silent.

The Bottom Line

Christa Pike’s family is the family that broke her. A physically abusive father. A mother who didn’t believe her. Relatives who hurt her. A grandmother who loved her and died too soon. And a system that knew and did nothing.

As Tennessee prepares to execute her, that family is nowhere to be seen. The people who should have protected her are not standing beside her. The people who hurt her are not facing consequences. And Pike, 50 years old and awaiting lethal injection, is left to face the end alone, just as she has faced everything else.

Thank you for bringing to light the neglect and abandonment of Christ’s Pike’s parents. What a role we take when we birth a person into the world. But, you are wrong in your final statement. Christa is not alone. Loved ones will hold vigil for her st several locations today. She will be met by loved ones on the other side, including her grandmother and others that have suffered from mistreatment, mental illness, and neglect. I hold her I. The light today. I am with her, though mikes away. I invite others that have suffered or who have try empathy for suffering to join me.

Ik ben Kees uit Nederland. Her family and abusers should be here today to watch the execution. This would be a punishment for them to see what has become off their abusive acts. They are aldo some percent quilty of this horrific crime. RIP Colleen.

This makes me so happy you say this. While I understand what she did was truly wrong she as completely failed in life and it is the reason she did what she did. Some say ohh we have all had abuse but didn’t turnout this way but not everyone is wired the same way an handles everything the same. We all handle trauma differently.

Who knew her life was so terrible. I to have lived through some trauma. I handled mine differently, but I do understand it better now. She never received love. Although this boy swept her off her feet. She believed in him and forever. She took out the competition. May she repent and give God the glory. Where she can find the truest LOVE OF ALL. ❤️

Facts.. My life: There were 6 of us, 6 daughters who were abused by our mother (not by our dad, when he was around, yet tough love was all we knew, you never cried or showed any type of emotion other than a fake smile). Confusing all of us with what to do with all of our emotions, thoughts. I’d say that we all have an anger management problem, we all can be a chameleon (our safety mechanism), we all can (white lie our way out of any unsafe situation (survival’s our strongest tool). Yet, we are not out here breaking the law, we might say hey the lines back there or excuse me to someone passing by “If they say something rude or get mouthy unexpectedly.” We have an automatic response to put people in there place “When disrespected, when others are being blatantly rude.” Here’s a thought: “What does my life have anything to do with their life? Absolutely nothing.. What are others gaining by putting me or others down anyhow? Just a hot seat with in hell with the devil. Personal check in “Is a day to day, moment to moment basis, especially for those that have had enough already (So to speak). No one is perfect, just wanting others to start focusing on themselves instead of ridiculing, putting down others because “No one knew what kind of day I had before they crossed my path, walk with kindness, empathy, compassion, honey instead of vinegar gets you much further in life & these days the ways in which the world has been turning “Might even save your life, if you just focus on your own life, your own family & be kind to others “The world would be a better place!” ( I live in a small town, I have to walk to get groceries with cancer, it’s not fun, I stop, I take breaks & it’s not even that far (It’s just two very heavy bags), not once did anyone pull over & ask if I need help. When I was younger, we lived in a time where everyone helped out everyone. Even though times have changed, it doesn’t mean to leave our doors unlocked anymore, it does mean however that if we treat everyone with kindness that we can possibly change most outcomes from what’s going on now. There are more Gen-x’s than there are gen z’s & if that’s incorrect “Well we are tougher, so we can withstand more than most.” Cheers !

Yes, We see the affects of an unnatural failed familys affect on this woman, a family member from infancy and there are so many more out there. Its so very disturbing and heart breaking, neglect, sick minds.
Although cruel unnatural behavior will not continue forever, there is hope!
Bible prohecy promises a miraculous outcome with divine intervention, exterminating the wickedness!

After being in isolationist 23 and 24 hours a day that is worse than death. She was a teen and did a horrible thing. But that isolating her from human beings for over 20 years is too much..as the botch execution

Her parents are dead anyways… it didn’t take much to find that out. Honestly though she didn’t learn a thing in prison this is just another stunt to try and have more days. She tried to kill again not that long ago! I’m sorry but stop blaming what happened and start actually accepting that this person is just evil.

Im tired of people making excuses for monsters. I was molested and repeatedly raped for 11years as a child by my atepdad. My mom is a abusive narcissist that never believe me and was very abusive as well. I’ve been in 2 abusive relationships. My ex split my head open when i was 6 months pregnant. I’m not out here hurting anyone or killing anyone. In fact I feel so much guilt if I accidently hurt someones feelings. I dont want to hurt anyone even 1 millionth of 1 percent of the way i was hurt. The guilt would eat me alive. Their is no excuse for what Christa did. None whatsoever and making excuses for her is very offensive to people like me who have lived through hell and still manage to be good people.

I completely and wholeheartedly agree with you. Endless millions of people have had an extreme, intense, horrible and terrible upbringing as children and teenagers BUT THEY HAVE NEVER TORTURED AND MURDERED ANYONE. 🎯 💯 ✔️

I find it interesting that, allegedly and supposedly, Christa Pike was sexually molested several times and raped as well, and yet, her “boyfriend,” Tadaryl Shipp, not only had a “relationship with her,” BUT he also admitted to having a part in mutilating, obliterating, torturing and murdering Colleen Slemmer.

Ummm…if Chista was sooo phenomenally traumatized by being abused, molested and raped by men, why did she have a boyfriend…who was a man? Hmmm… 🙄

After reading the article on Christa, the one thought that keeps lingering is isn’t forgiveness by the victims family the best way for the person to go about their life . Forgiveness means how far you can go to make amends with life without the loved one. It doesn’t mean forgetting the crime, but it means allowing the almighty to serve the justice. This woman has gone through a lot of things since her childhood, abuse, trauma and loveless family of all the things a mother who should have been there for the child instead was out enjoying herself and letting the child grow up in environment of neglect and abuse. Who is responsible for the crime committed by the child at 18 years old, where was justice system then , why no one intervened and helped her? Is her death going to bring back the victim? Are the victim’s family going to be sleeping peacefully post the execution? I do know the crime was horrendous and an innocent girl died BUT

So that is supposed to make everything OK? She should have been patted lightly on the hand and let go? She brutally and sadistically murdered a young woman, and even bragged about it to other classmates, showing them a piece of her skull. She carved an inverted pentagram on her chest for Christ’s sake! She deserves every misery thrown at her! Hopefully now she does wind up with brain damage as has been speculated. She has lived 30 plus years in prison being taken care of by decent hard working citizens tax money which was too good for her. It’s too bad our government doesn’t practice an eye for an eye!

You are definitely extremely passionate with your comment, and quite frankly, millions of people have and share the same thoughts, beliefs and ideas as you do! 🎯 💯 ✔️

It’s one thing to shoot someone in the head and/or stab them in the heart and walk away and their victim lost their life and we all get get that and understand that, too.

However, Christa evilly, viciously and violently tortured Colleen Slemmer for 30, 45 or 60 minutes BEFORE she struck Colleen’s skull several times with a large chunk of asphalt.

Then, she left her in the forest to rot and bragged about it to others showing them the piece of the “skull souvenir.” Christa deserved nothing whatsoever in medical attention.👎 That most certainly should’ve been withheld from her since she was being executed and exterminated anyway. 😏

If Christa has “brain damage” from oxygen deprivation, Collen suffered phenomenal brain damage from having her skull crushed to smithereens! Karma, Christa, KARMA! 😁

no mention of the fact that she had PTSD l on an antipsychotic that casue violent ideation. Sucidal homicidal ideation is the number one mental break that a person cannot control. Noone commits the violence Christa did without having been subject to it themselves and/or under the influence of pharma medication not to mention the complete breakdown of any support system. I can’t believe the prosecution! or her legal team and I want to know what person could endure what she did as a victim and not become the prey with or without drugs? The mother and father should be on death row. And all the people responsibile in the agencies that should have helped her should be in prison. There should be no escape clause for those in position to help and don’t. The system is people, why did they try so hard to victimize and kill her? This is not to mitigate her crime but it MUST be viewed in context. Crista never had control from love enough to compensate for the violence she endured. She was primed by her environment and the medication was the trigger. At no time did she have control.

Yes, she does have family. She has me. Please pray for her during this time because she may have another chance at life again beyond the needle if things go right and she needs the prayers, positivity, and support that everyone needs in times like these to continue to make the best decisions for their selves. The DOJ is keeping everyone in the dark, attorneys do not return calls for their own good professional reasons, and it’s not easy to watch one of your best friends lay in limbo between life and death when she maybe never should’ve been there facing death in the first place. For many different reasons, and in many different ways.

Thank you for your rationale and understanding dialogue during this time.

I am praying for her, it is terrible what she did but it is also so cruel how she endured so much evil from people around her during her childhood. Lack of love Can damage a child development in so many ways. God, please have mercy and show your infinite love to this child of yours…in the name of Jesus..Amen.

A death sentence is no different from murder. We all from around the world should rise against. Vengeance personal or otherwise blinds the mind and prevents it from seeing good in another. No one is born evil or is 100% evil. If you do good, GOD helped you. The Word of GOD created the Universe and so it’s the greatest and highest law. Human laws are selfish and biased so can’t be trusted. His Word said “if you are sinless be the first to cast a stone” not “if you are not a murderer kill a murderer”. There is no good way of killing a person let alone an unarmed helpless person strapped to a bed, electric chair, a pole or on a noose. This is the darkest of evils and wickedness done by a State or person. It creates room for more evil. Place bad persons in the environment of GOD’s Word and love and you’ll see how loving and kind they are ask Apostle Paul of the Holy Bible or John G. Lake. If the Lord Jesus raised the dead, everyone is important to Him. GOD bless you.

I believe that every human being, regardless of the mistakes they have made, should have the opportunity to demonstrate that change is possible. I support Christa Pike being given a second chance at life because I believe that people can grow, take responsibility for their actions, and become fundamentally different from the person they once were.
If Christa were given the opportunity to continue living, that opportunity would also carry a profound responsibility: to acknowledge the harm caused, to live with accountability, and to dedicate the rest of her life to making meaningful changes. A second chance would not erase the past or diminish the suffering of those affected. Rather, it would recognize that a person’s life can continue to have meaning through remorse, rehabilitation, personal growth, and positive contributions to others.
No one can change what happened in the past. But if someone genuinely has the opportunity to change, there is value in allowing them to demonstrate that change over time. A second chance can mean learning from past actions, accepting responsibility, developing compassion, and choosing every day to live differently.
For these reasons, I believe Christa Pike should be given the opportunity to live and prove through her actions—not simply her words—that people are capable of change and that a life once marked by terrible choices can still become a life devoted to accountability, reflection, and making better choices. Honestly my heart fill for her, May the Lord have mercy on her
