No. Lonzo Ball has publicly denied that he is retiring.
After reports and social media posts began describing his recent podcast comments as a retirement announcement, Ball responded directly on X.
“I retired? News to me lol cuz I’m still waiting for a call,” he wrote, adding that the NBA season is long.
That response clarified his current position. Ball does not have an NBA contract, but being unsigned is not the same as being retired.
At 28, he remains a free agent and appears willing to continue his career if the right opportunity arrives.
Whether an NBA team eventually makes that call remains uncertain, especially considering his injury history and recent production, but Ball himself has not closed the door.
Why Did Lonzo Ball Retirement Rumors Start?
The speculation came from Ball’s appearance on the Ball in the Family podcast.
During a conversation about his NBA journey and the serious knee problems that changed the direction of his career, Ball spoke with unusual openness about what basketball has meant to him.
He said he felt he had given everything he could to the game and expressed gratitude that basketball allowed him to reach the NBA and experience the life he dreamed about as a child.
Ball also acknowledged something more difficult. He does not believe fans ever saw the best version of him.
He explained that injuries changed what he was physically capable of doing on a basketball court. Even when his basketball instincts told him where he needed to be, his body could not always respond the way it once had.
Those comments were emotional and largely framed in the past tense. Clips circulated online without the full context, leading some people to interpret them as confirmation that Ball had decided to stop playing.
He never actually announced his retirement during the conversation.
Lonzo Ball Says He Never Reached His Peak
Perhaps the most revealing part of Ball’s comments involved the career he believes injuries prevented him from having.
Ball entered the NBA with enormous expectations after the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Those numbers were considerably below the production he had shown before his major knee problems.
His three-point shooting also struggled, limiting his offensive impact even though his passing instincts and defensive awareness remained useful.
Cleveland eventually traded Ball to the Utah Jazz during the 2025-26 season as part of its roster changes.
Utah subsequently waived him before he appeared in a game for the franchise.
