Where to Watch Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero" Music Video After the VMAs

Taylor Swift turned the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards into her own cinematic premiere, but fans who missed the live broadcast are scrambling to find the full “Patient Zero” video online. Here’s exactly where it’s available right now.

The superstar debuted the self-directed visual during Sunday night’s ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where she also received MTV’s inaugural Artist Director Honor. The video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, with Swift herself appearing as the haunting figure at the center of a twist-filled narrative about a toxic ex.

Where to Watch the “Patient Zero” Music Video

The full video is now streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Notably, it is not currently available on YouTube, a deliberate choice that marks a shift in how major artists are distributing visual content.

For those who want to watch it within the context of the awards show, replays of the 2026 VMAs are available via MTV, CBS, and Paramount+. The ceremony will also become available globally on Paramount+ and MTV on the following day.

What Happens in the Video

The “Patient Zero” visual is a haunting, cinematic story with a genuine thriller-style plot twist. Swift plays the dead ex of Farrell’s character, a man who has moved on with Johnson’s character. As the video progresses, Swift’s ghost follows the new couple, ultimately warning Johnson that Farrell is trying to kill her the same way he did Swift.

The video was directed by Swift herself, with cinematography from three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki, known for his work on Gravity, Birdman, and The Revenant.

The Story Behind the Song

Swift revealed that “Patient Zero” was inspired by a real conversation with friends. “One of my friends told us that she had been reached out to by the new girlfriend of an ex of hers, asking for guidance about whether she had had the same experiences with this guy,” she explained. “Everyone in our group just immediately started saying like, ‘Oh, I’ve been through that too.’”

The song appears on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition of Swift’s blockbuster album, which dropped Friday with four previously unreleased tracks.

A Historic Night at the VMAs

The premiere capped a milestone evening for Swift. She received the first-ever Artist Director Honor, presented by Dakota Johnson, recognizing her work behind the camera across nearly two decades. In her speech, Swift noted she has appeared in roughly 60 music videos and wrote and directed 18 of them.

The award also made Swift the most-awarded artist in VMA history, breaking her tie with Beyoncé at 30 wins.
