Patricia Richardson spent eight seasons playing America’s most beloved TV mom. But the role she’s most proud of has nothing to do with a script. The Home Improvement star walked away from a lucrative ninth season and a steady Hollywood career for one reason: her three children. Here’s a closer look at the family that mattered more than fame.
The Marriage That Started It All
Richardson married fellow actor Ray Baker in 1982. The couple met on the New York theater scene, and their union lasted 13 years before ending in divorce in 1995.
Baker, born in 1948, is a longtime character actor with more than 100 screen credits. He and Richardson actually appeared together on The Cosby Show during her early career, playing a couple in the third season.
Three Children, One Priority
Patricia and Ray Baker welcomed three children during their marriage. Their oldest, Henry Richardson Baker, was born on February 22, 1985. Six years later, Richardson gave birth to twins Roxanne Elizabeth and Joe Castle on January 3, 1991.
The timing of the twins’ arrival was remarkable. Just three months after giving birth, Richardson stepped into the role of Jill Taylor on Home Improvement, replacing Frances Fisher at the last minute. She had no idea the show would become a phenomenon.
The Decision That Changed Her Career
When Home Improvement wrapped its eighth season in 1999, ABC came calling with a massive offer for a ninth year. Richardson said no.
“I was a single [divorced] parent and away from my kids too much,” she explained. The show’s grueling schedule left little room for the kind of parenting she wanted to do.
She later joined Lifetime’s Strong Medicine on a shorter contract that worked around her parenting schedule. But even that became difficult to manage. “I decided to leave the business for four years until my kids got out of school,” she said.
The Reunion That Melted Hearts
In July 2026, Richardson shared a photo on Instagram that sent Home Improvement fans into a nostalgic spiral. Captioned “My other boys,” the image showed her alongside her onscreen sons Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Randy) and Taran Noah Smith (Mark).
Richardson has stayed close with her TV children over the years. She made separate appearances with Thomas on Last Man Standing, and she’s spoken warmly about their continued connection.
Her real children, now adults, remain her greatest pride. Richardson has said she treasures the close relationship she maintains with all three of them.
The Bottom Line
Patricia Richardson walked away from Hollywood’s biggest stages to be present for Henry, Roxanne, and Joe. She divorced Ray Baker in 1995 and raised three children largely on her own. Decades later, she doesn’t regret a single sacrifice. The actress who made millions laugh as Jill Taylor found her real calling in a much quieter role: mom.
