Sophia Bush Ex-Husbands: Inside Her Two Very Different Marriages

Sophia Bush has been married three times. Two of those marriages ended in divorce. The first lasted just five months. The second lasted thirteen months. Her third, to former soccer star Ashlyn Harris, was kept secret for over a year before being revealed in September 2026.

The One Tree Hill alum and activist has been remarkably candid about the lessons she learned from her failed marriages — particularly the first one, which she now describes as something she was essentially pressured into.

Here’s what we know about Sophia Bush’s ex-husbands and the relationships that shaped her.

Who Is Chad Michael Murray? Her First Husband

Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray were the quintessential on-screen couple who took their romance off-camera. They met on the set of One Tree Hill, where they played Brooke Davis and Lucas Scott — a couple whose fictional love story complicated the show’s central love triangle for years.

They started dating in 2003, got engaged in 2004, and married in April 2005 at the Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica. Bush was 22 years old.

The marriage unraveled almost immediately. They separated after just five months.

What made the split particularly messy was Bush’s attempt to have the marriage annulled, citing “fraud.” That request was denied, and the divorce was finalized in December 2006. Murray has since commented on the union, telling The Cut: “I was a baby. I didn’t know up, down, left, right. You move out there, and you go, ‘Well, what am I supposed to do now?’”

Bush has been far more pointed about the experience. In 2018, she said she felt “pressured” into the marriage and was too young to make that decision. She told Andy Cohen that “everybody’s 22 and stupid,” adding that the marriage was “not a thing I actually really wanted to do.” She described how the logistics of the show — 200 people depending on her to be on time, producers telling her she was the only person who could get Murray to work on schedule — made walking away feel impossible.

The two continued working together on One Tree Hill until Murray left the show in 2009, meaning they had to navigate years of awkwardness in front of the cameras.

Who Is Grant Hughes? Her Second Husband

Sophia Bush met Grant Hughes nearly a decade before they ever became romantic. They were introduced on a New Year’s trip to Nicaragua and became fast friends, but their lives were too busy for anything more. “We became fast friends but only saw each other a few times a year because both of us were traveling all of the time for work,” Bush told Vogue.

Hughes is an entrepreneur and real estate investor from Tulsa, Oklahoma. During the pandemic, as the world slowed down, their friendship deepened into something more. They made their first public appearance together in May 2020.

Hughes proposed in August 2021 on a classic Riva boat on Lake Como, Italy, during golden hour. Bush announced the engagement on Instagram with the caption, “So it turns out that being your favorite person’s favorite person is the actual best feeling on planet Earth.”

They married on June 11, 2022, at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa — a venue Bush deliberately chose to spotlight the city she and Hughes loved. “When thinking about the purpose of our wedding, we wanted our community that pours into us to pour into a community at large that we love and that deserves all our attention,” she explained. The ceremony included a walk down the aisle together, with Bush in a custom Monique Lhuillier gown inspired by California, Oklahoma, and Italy.

But behind the beautiful ceremony, Bush was already struggling. In a Glamour essay published in April 2024, she revealed that she was close to calling off the wedding in April 2022. “Instead of running away, I doubled down on being a model wife,” she wrote.

The breaking point came on their first anniversary in June 2023. Hughes posted a tribute to their marriage on Instagram. Bush later wrote that when she saw it, “the blood drain from my face.” She forced herself to post something in return, then walked into the bathroom and threw up.

Their official separation date was June 27, 2023 — just sixteen days after their one-year anniversary. Bush filed for divorce in August 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. Neither party requested spousal support, but they later disagreed over a “Unity Agreement” in their prenup before eventually reaching a confidential settlement on December 30, 2024.

The Friend Who Changed Everything

The most revealing detail about Bush’s marriage to Hughes came from a conversation she had with one of her best friends after the split. The friend told her plainly: “I gotta say, that was just painful to watch, and I’m so glad you’re getting out of it.” Then the friend went further — suggesting that Bush might not actually be attracted to men at all.

Bush recalled that conversation on her Work in Progress podcast. She said she had never felt she could identify as queer because she had primarily been involved with men, despite having connections to the queer community since childhood. The friend’s observation gave her what she called a “revolutionary f**king idea” about her own identity.

In April 2024, Bush publicly came out as queer in a Glamour cover story, confirming her relationship with Ashlyn Harris.

What Sophia Bush Learned

Looking back, Bush’s two marriages tell very different stories. The first was a mistake made by someone too young and too pressured to know how to say no. The second was an attempt at something real that ultimately revealed a deeper truth about who she is.

Neither marriage lasted. But Bush has been clear that she doesn’t view them as failures — they were part of a journey that led her to where she is now. As she put it, she “had to go through the darkness to get back to the light.”

Her third marriage, to Ashlyn Harris, was kept private for over a year before being revealed in September 2026. Bush wrote in her memoir that she was tired of calling Harris her “partner.” “You’re not my partner,” she told her. “You’re my wife. And it feels so amazing to say that.”
