Who Is Chase Layne Patin? Texas Man Accused of Shooting Deputy and Stealing Patrol Car

Chase Layne Patin is a 25-year-old Texas man accused of shooting a Harris County sheriff’s deputy in the leg, stealing the officer’s patrol vehicle, and leading authorities on an 11-hour manhunt that ended with his arrest in a backyard shed.

The case drew statewide attention after the Texas Department of Public Safety issued a Blue Alert, a notification system reserved for suspects accused of seriously injuring or killing law enforcement officers. Patin now faces multiple felony charges, and his arrest has raised questions about how a man with prior felony convictions and an active warrant was out on bond in the first place.

What Happened on September 30?

The incident began around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, when Harris County deputies responded to a family disturbance call at a home in the 1100 block of Bayou Drive in Channelview, east of Houston.

According to court records, a family member had tried to leave the home, but Patin shot the family member’s car tire and then fired into the ceiling when the person went back inside. Before deputies arrived, authorities received information that “a male did not want to go back to prison, he wanted to do suicide by cop, and had shot his mother’s vehicle”.

When deputies arrived, Patin allegedly opened fire. Deputy Javier Perez-Garcia was struck in the leg. Multiple deputies reported that Patin shot in their direction before they found Perez-Garcia wounded.

After the shooting, Patin fled in the injured deputy’s marked patrol vehicle. The SUV was found abandoned a short time later near Dell Dale Street and the East Freeway, about a mile from the scene.

The Manhunt and Arrest

Law enforcement from multiple agencies, including the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals, and Harris County Precinct 3 Constables, set up a perimeter and searched the neighborhood throughout the night.

The break came early Thursday morning. A resident let their dogs into the backyard, and the animals would not stop barking toward the tree line off West Brentwood. When the homeowner spotted movement near an outdoor storage shed, they called 911.

Minutes later, deputies and federal marshals surrounded the shed. Patin walked out with his hands up and surrendered without further incident. Residents at a nearby home were evacuated as a precaution. Officials confirmed the people living there had no connection to Patin.

Patin was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and taken to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office facility on Lockwood Drive for questioning.

The Charges

Patin faces four counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and one theft charge for allegedly taking the deputy’s patrol vehicle. Bond has been denied on all five charges.

Criminal History and Bond Questions

Court records show Patin had an active warrant for his arrest for bond forfeiture before the shooting. He had been wanted since July 17 after failing to obtain a GPS monitor as a condition of his bond.

Patin has previous convictions and arrests tied to unlawful weapon possession, driving while intoxicated, and narcotics offenses. Andy Kahan of Crime Stoppers of Houston noted that Patin was out on bond for felon in possession of a firearm and had four prior felony convictions at the time of the shooting.

The Injured Deputy

Deputy Javier Perez-Garcia was taken to a hospital for surgery and was listed in stable condition. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the deputy was in good spirits and expected to recover.

The Blue Alert issued for Patin was eventually canceled following his arrest.

What Comes Next

Patin remains in custody at the Harris County Jail with bond denied. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is expected to present the case to a grand jury in the coming weeks. As with all criminal cases, Patin is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
