Patricia Richardson and Ray Baker’s Divorce: How Home Improvement Destroyed Their Marriage

Patricia Richardson spent eight seasons playing America’s most grounded TV mom. But behind the cameras, her real-life marriage was quietly falling apart. The Home Improvement star has been remarkably candid about why her 13-year marriage to actor Ray Baker ended in 1995, and her explanation is as painful as it is familiar: the job that made her famous also made her absent from the family she was trying to support.

A Marriage That Started With Promise

Patricia Richardson and Ray Baker married on June 20, 1982. Both were working actors, and they built a life together in Los Angeles as Richardson’s career gained momentum. The couple welcomed three children: Henry Richardson Baker, born February 22, 1985, and twins Roxanne Elizabeth and Joe Castle Baker, born January 3, 1991.

When Richardson was cast as Jill Taylor in 1991, she was nursing newborns and juggling the demands of a growing family. Baker, according to Richardson, was initially her biggest cheerleader. He even predicted the show would run for seven years after she filmed the pilot.

The Job That Took Over Everything

Home Improvement wasn’t a typical sitcom. Richardson was deeply involved in shaping her character and the show’s scripts, which meant longer days and more time away from home than she had anticipated.

“Because I was involved in all the writing, I was away from them more than I wanted and felt I missed so many things,” Richardson said in a 2018 interview.

The schedule was relentless. In a 1992 Los Angeles Times profile, Richardson described bringing her 18-month-old twins to the set because she couldn’t bear to be away from them. “If they cry as you’re leaving the dressing room—’Mama, Mama’—and you have to shut the door, it’s hard,” she said.

But the twins could come to work. Her husband couldn’t get that time back.

The Words That Explain Everything

Richardson has never been ambiguous about what broke the marriage. In a 2018 interview with Closer Weekly, she said it plainly: “He was always mad I was never home. Hence the divorce.”

The resentment wasn’t one-sided. Richardson was desperate for time with her kids and her husband, but the show consumed her days. She stopped attending charity events. She rarely said yes to anything that took her further from her family. And still, it wasn’t enough.

“I didn’t do charity events because I was desperate for time with my kids and husband,” she said.

The Aftermath: A Divorce, Then a Decision

Baker filed for divorce, and the marriage officially ended on August 31, 1995. Richardson was now a single mother of three, navigating custody schedules and the emotional toll of a public breakup.

That experience directly shaped her decision to walk away from Home Improvement after Season 8. ABC offered her $1 million per episode for a ninth season. She said no.

“I was a single [divorced] parent and away from my kids too much,” she explained.

She later admitted she never wanted to do a ninth season at all. Her counteroffer, equal pay with Tim Allen and an executive producer credit, was designed to be rejected. It was her way of saying no without burning every bridge.

What Came After

Richardson briefly returned to television with Strong Medicine, a role she took because the schedule allowed her to co-parent. She later left the business entirely for four years while her children finished school.

“I left the show, and I have put my children first since then,” she said. “That’s why I’ve kept quitting the business: to be with them.”

Ray Baker remarried in 1997 to actress Colleen Dodson. Richardson has not remarried.

The Bottom Line

Patricia Richardson and Ray Baker’s marriage didn’t end because of scandal or betrayal. It ended because a hit show demanded more of Richardson than a marriage could survive. She was the breadwinner, the on-set problem solver, and the mother who desperately wanted to be present. The math never worked. And in the end, she chose her children over the job that had already cost her so much.
