Otto Sirgo spent five decades in the public eye, but his children chose a different path. The legendary Mexican actor, who died Tuesday at 79, left behind three children: Valerie, Tania, and Cristian. They largely stayed out of the spotlight even as their father became one of the most recognizable faces in telenovela history.
Their decision to live privately didn’t stop them from being the center of his world. In his final days, it was Valerie who spoke for the family, confirming his cause of death and revealing his last wish. Here’s what we know about the Sirgo children.
Valerie Sirgo: The Voice of the Family
Valerie Sirgo has emerged as the family’s public face in the days following her father’s death. She confirmed to reporters that Otto died of heart failure after a period of physical decline. “My dad was tired and his heart failed him a little,” she said. “He always enjoyed life very much. He was a great father, a great husband, a great companion, and a great actor, producer, director. Above all, a great father.”
Valerie also revealed her father’s final wish: to have his ashes scattered near the Popocatépetl volcano, a view he cherished. “He said he wanted us to rent a helicopter and take him to the Popo,” she recalled. “It’s complicated, but we’ll take him as far as we can, we’ll try something similar.”
She described Otto as deeply devoted to his family, a “very protective” father and grandfather who spent his final conversations talking about soccer, his grandchildren, and the teams he loved. Valerie also noted that the family holds a large collection of photographs Otto took over the years and hopes to organize an exhibition to showcase that artistic side of him.
Tania Sirgo: A Brief Foray into Acting
Tania, the younger of Otto and Maleni’s two daughters, followed her parents into the entertainment industry, at least briefly. She appeared in several television productions in the late 1990s, including Mujer, casos de la vida real, El alma no tiene color, and ¿Qué nos pasa?.
Unlike her father, however, she didn’t pursue a long-term career in front of the cameras. She chose a quiet life away from the industry, and little is known about her current personal life.
Cristian Sirgo: The Eldest Son
Cristian Sirgo is Otto’s eldest child, born before his marriage to Maleni Morales. He has maintained an even lower profile than his sisters. There is no public information about his profession, whether he lives in Mexico, or whether he has a family of his own.
His existence was confirmed through multiple biographical sources and family records, but he has never sought the spotlight his father inhabited for so long.
A Family That Chose Privacy
What makes the Sirgo children unusual in the world of Mexican entertainment is their deliberate avoidance of fame. While their parents were fixtures on television screens across Latin America, Valerie, Tania, and Cristian built lives outside the industry. They married, raised children, and showed up for their father when it mattered, without ever asking for attention in return.
Their mother, Maleni Morales, died in November 2020 after a battle with lung cancer and a subsequent pulmonary thrombosis. Otto never remarried. He spoke often of the “empty chair syndrome,” the habit of turning to speak to a wife who was no longer there. His children became his remaining anchor.
Now, they are the ones carrying his legacy. Valerie’s voice has been the one guiding the public through his final chapter. The helicopter to Popocatépetl may not happen exactly as Otto envisioned. But his children will find a way. That’s what family does.
