Otto Sirgo spent nearly five decades in the spotlight, but the most important role of his life played out far from the cameras. Yes, the legendary Mexican actor was married—for almost 47 years—to actress Maleni Morales, a love story that only ended when she died in 2020.
Sirgo, who died Tuesday at 79, never remarried. He never even dated again. The grief of losing his wife of nearly half a century became a defining part of his final years, and it’s impossible to tell the story of his life without telling the story of his marriage.
Who Was Maleni Morales?
Maleni Morales was an actress in her own right, with credits in some of Mexico’s most beloved telenovelas, including Los Ricos También Lloran, Rosa Salvaje, La Pícara Soñadora, and Luz Clarita. She and Sirgo met in the entertainment industry and married in 1974.
Their marriage was not without its challenges. Sirgo admitted years later that the couple went through a separation at one point. “It’s a whole life, so many years, we had differences, we even had a separation, but the truth is we came back,” he told Unicable. He credited patience as the key to their longevity: “We made a promise to have patience with each other, which is the key, I think, to long relationships.”
Together they raised two daughters, Tania and Valerie, and built a life that included a restaurant in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. They were one of the most enduring couples in Mexican show business.
The Diagnosis and the Final Goodbye
In 2019, Morales was diagnosed with lung cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation, and by September 2020, Sirgo told the program De Primera Mano that the cancer had disappeared.
Then came the complication no one saw coming.
On November 21, 2020, Morales died at age 67 from a pulmonary thrombosis, a blood clot that developed as a consequence of the cancer. Sirgo was devastated.
He described their final moments together in heartbreaking detail. “I have the peace of mind that she was asleep, she ended well, calmly,” he said. The night before she died, he visited her in the hospital. “Yesterday, when I left the hospital, I said goodbye to her, I gave her a kiss and a hug. That was the farewell.”
A Widower’s Grief
Sirgo never recovered from losing Maleni. In interview after interview, he spoke openly about the emptiness she left behind.
“Since Maleni died, I practically don’t go out anymore. I’ve stopped socializing. I’m at home, watching TV,” he said in May 2025. He described it as “the empty chair syndrome”—the habit of turning to speak to someone who is no longer there.
He admitted he still thought about her every single day. “Time only helps you get used to missing them, to making it natural. I think about Maleni every day, I remember her every day,” he said.
When fellow actor María Antonieta de las Nieves suggested they go out together—both were widowed—Sirgo gently declined. “Right now, I’m still not ready for a relationship, and in a year I might be even less ready. I’m not looking for anything.”
His final Instagram post, shared in November 2024, was a photo with Maleni. The caption read: “Today marks one more year. It’s been four and I still remember you every day just the same.”
The Legacy of Their Marriage
Otto Sirgo was married to Maleni Morales for nearly 47 years. They built a family, weathered a separation, and found their way back to each other. When she died, a part of him went with her.
Their daughters, Tania and Valerie, survive both parents. The family has not announced funeral plans for Sirgo, but his daughter told reporters his heart was “tired”—a fitting phrase for a man who gave so much of it to one person for so long.
For fans of Mexican television, the Sirgo-Morales love story is its own kind of telenovela: complicated, enduring, and ultimately heartbreaking. But it was real. And for nearly five decades, it was everything.
