Who Is Sombr? Breakout Star's Rise, VMAs Tribute and Dating Life

Sombr has gone from a teenager posting songs on TikTok to a Grammy-nominated artist performing alongside Taylor Swift and headlining sold-out tours in just a few years. But for all the success, there’s one thing the 21-year-old singer-songwriter hasn’t figured out yet: love.

The alt-pop star, whose real name is Shane Michael Boose, has been remarkably candid about his single status despite his rapid ascent to fame. And his recent appearance at the 2026 MTV VMAs, where he opened the George Michael tribute wearing the late icon’s actual leather jacket, only solidified what the industry already knows: Sombr is the real deal.

Who Is Sombr?

Sombr was born in New York City on July 5, 2005, and grew up on the Lower East Side. He attended the prestigious LaGuardia High School, majoring in vocal music, where he spent his class time in the back of the room writing songs on his iPad.

His stage name comes from his initials: SMB, for Shane Michael Boose. He grew up listening to everything from Radiohead to the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack to Pop Smoke, and he names Jeff Buckley, Phoebe Bridgers, and The 1975 as major influences.

The Overnight Success That Wasn’t Actually Overnight

In 2022, at just 16 years old, Sombr posted a song called “Caroline” on TikTok before going to bed. When he woke up the next morning, it had gone viral, and record labels were flooding his inbox.

“I woke up the next day and it was kind of viral, and pretty much every record label under the sun was in my inbox,” he recalled. “So, as crazy as it sounds, it was an overnight success.”

He dropped out of high school and signed with Warner Records in early 2023. But the path from viral moment to sustainable career wasn’t smooth. By the end of 2024, he had lost his way creatively and was preparing for the possibility of moving back in with his parents.

“It was hitting a low, and that was affecting me creatively because I started trying to make what I thought people wanted to hear, or what I thought would do well, and it wasn’t working,” he said.

The Breakthrough: “Back to Friends” and Beyond

Everything changed in December 2024 with the release of “Back to Friends,” a swirl of shakers, dramatic piano chords, and harmonies that captured the anxiety of post-hookup confusion. Sombr has said he played the finished chorus back and felt that, with this song, it was finally going to happen for him.

He was right. “Back to Friends” and the follow-up single “Undressed” both climbed the Billboard Hot 100, and his debut album I Barely Know Her arrived in August 2025, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard 200.

What makes Sombr stand out is that he writes and produces all of his own music. He was the sole writer on every track of I Barely Know Her, co-producing with Tony Berg except for two tracks he produced alone. Taylor Swift, who has become something of a mentor to him, put it simply at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala: “Sombr is the future, and he does it all on his own, and he doesn’t need AI. The kids are fine.”

The 2026 VMAs Tribute: Wearing George Michael’s Jacket

Sombr opened the 2026 MTV VMAs’ tribute to George Michael, performing “Faith” and “Father Figure” while wearing a piece of music history: the actual black Harley-Davidson leather jacket that Michael wore during his 1988 Faith Tour and in his famous Diet Coke commercial. The jacket was customized by Michael himself with chain link and pins.

“George’s music is as relevant and timeless as ever. I grew up listening to his music, and he’s been such a big inspiration,” Sombr told Vogue ahead of the performance. “The fact he wrote, produced, and performed all his own music is so inspiring to me, because I do the same. He was also 19 when he broke internationally. I wish I could have gotten to meet him.”

“To wear a jacket that has become so synonymous with that era was pretty surreal, and an honor,” he added.

The tribute, held September 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, also featured RAYE, Teddy Swims, and a surprise appearance by Adam Lambert.

Is Sombr Dating Anyone?

The short answer: no. Sombr is single, and he’s been refreshingly honest about it.

In an April 2026 interview with Nylon, he said plainly: “I’m still a man that feels emotions. I’m still very single. And I still deal with some issues that have to do with love.”

He also opened up about how fame has complicated his personal life. “I just have to accept that I don’t have privacy, which is not something I’ll ever complain about because this is what I wanted,” he said. “But I have to always act like I’m always being watched. Because I am.”

In December 2025, he was even more direct on the In Your Dreams with Owen Thiele podcast: “It’s not in the cards for me right now. It is what it is. My big dream is to get a girlfriend. Please. Not right now, but eventually. That’s like my lifetime dream.”

His ideal partner? “A very talented creative. I’m very attracted to very talented people that I can look up to and has a sense of humor.”

His Songs Are About Real Heartbreak

While Sombr doesn’t confirm which specific relationships inspired his songs, he has admitted that his music draws from real experiences. His recent hit “Homewrecker” tells the story of reconnecting with an ex who has moved on, and he confirmed it’s based on a true situation.

“I was like, ‘Bro I can be so much better than this fool,’” he said. “He’s mad. Hopefully, he doesn’t come f—ing kill me.”

He has also cited movies like The Notebook and Call Me By Your Name as inspiration for the emotional landscapes of his songs.

What’s Next for Sombr

Sombr turned 21 on July 5, 2026. His sophomore album is set for release in fall 2026 and has already spawned three singles: “Homewrecker,” “Potential,” and “My Body Isn’t Ready.”

He’s also been nominated for Best New Artist at the 2026 Grammy Awards and has won two American Music Awards for Best Rock/Alternative Song and Best Rock/Alternative Album. Taylor Swift’s mentorship continues to be a defining presence in his career, and he performed two of her songs at her Songwriters Hall of Fame induction.

For a 21-year-old who dropped out of high school four years ago, Sombr has accomplished more than most artists do in a lifetime. The only thing missing, by his own admission, is someone to share it with. But if his track record is any indication, he’ll figure that out too, eventually.
